BPSB High School Student Councils Inaugurate BRIGHT Day

The SBHS Student Council hosted the inaugural BRIGHT Day on Thursday, March 28th. All high school student council clubs in Beauregard Parish as well as several SBHS athletics and organizations joined to create a positive and engaging day for our Special Education students to SHINE. The event started with an opening ceremony followed by inclusive track and field events, carnival games, and organized sports.
The vision for BRIGHT Day (Beauregard Reaching Inspiring and Giving Hope Together) was to create a sense of community, establish connections, and simply bridge the gap between our students. We believe that the impact on participants and volunteers will be lifelong and significant.
This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Jill Thibodeaux. Mrs. Thibodeaux dedicated her life to students with special needs teaching at SBHS from 1988-2008.
In an effort to encourage Special Education teachers, the Thibodeaux family has decided to grant one Special Education teacher or para in Beauregard Parish a scholarship each year. This money will be used for projects promoting social and life skills among Special Education students, which was Mrs. Thibodeaux’s way of making a difference in her students’ lives.

Using a greenhouse, she taught her students to be entrepreneurs by planting seeds and selling the plants each spring. Many of the SBHS alumni remember the suckers that her students would cook in the home economics room and sell at lunch, and we all loved winning a goldfish at the Junior carnival that her students so proudly provided each year.

Her family hopes to keep her legacy alive in Beauregard Parish schools. This year, they chose two recipients and recognized Lanie Laughlin of DeRidder Junior High and Amanda Sonnier at East Beauregard High School.
