Third grade students at South Beauregard Elementary are getting a chance to participate in the Robot-
ics Club to promote and support STEM learning. The club kicked off in October with students beginning to
build the VEX Robotics Super Car. STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teacher Monica Willis
started the club this year and hopes to build the program to include competition teams in the future.
“We are beginning this first year to lay a foundation for our students to grow in their understanding of
robotics and engineering skills,” she explained. “It is my plan that they will continue with their robotics learn-
ing over the next several years and that we can build up a team
of students who can participate in the VEX competitions in the
near future.”
The third grade students were selected by their science
teachers to participate in the first year of the club, which meets
after school twice a month. The students are using the VEX
Club program and the VEX Super Car kit. They will build their
own Super Cars, make them function manually initially, and
then use coding to make them run a specified course through
computer programming.
