The Beauregard Parish School Board seats a Student Representative to the board each year, according to Mike Greene, instructional supervisor. January will begin the 32nd consecutive year that the board has seated a non-voting student member.
“The Student Representative to the School Board is a privilege that is not available in all parishes,” said Greene. “This opportunity provides a direct link between the school board and the students of the parish.”
The sponsors of the student government organizations at each parish high school nominate one junior to interview as the potential representative to the board. The nominees agree to participate in one board meeting a month during the calendar year covering the last semester of their junior year and first semester of their senior year.
The nominees include Olivia Shirley, DeRidder High School, Kayelyn Watkins, East Beauregard High School, Brennan Cooley, Merryville High School, Isabel Palermo, Singer High School, and Lana West, South Beauregard High School.
The non-voting student representative provides input for the board on matters concerning students as well as gives a monthly report to the board about student activities in the schools.
An alternate is also selected by the committee to attend meetings and serve when the student representative is not available.
The five nominees for the 2025 Student Representative position participated in interviews before a panel of five student government sponsors plus the current student representative to the board. The 2025 Student Representative and alternate will be seated at the January 2025 school board meeting.
“It is an honor for these students to be selected to interview for the position,” said Greene. “The students represent the best of our student body governments and are qualified to serve as Student Representative to the school board.”
