Top elementary athletes compete at parish fitness meet

The Beauregard Parish Elementary Physical Fitness Meet was held Thursday, March 20, for contestants from seven parish schools.

The top three boys and top three girls from the competitions at each school earned the opportunity to compete in the parish meet. These schools include: DeRidder Elementary, East Beauregard Elementary, Merryville High School, Pine Wood Elementary, Singer High School, South Beauregard Elementary, and South Beauregard Upper Elementary.

Seven events, including the 50-yard dash, 600-yard run, shuttle run, sit and reach, standing long jump, pull ups, and curl ups were staged at DeRidder Elementary and the DeRidder High School track.

“The annual Elementary Physical Fitness Meet promotes exercise, fitness, and healthy lifestyles for all our elementary students and gives our elementary athletes a chance to excel in competition,” said Mike Greene, Supervisor of Physical Education.

All participants received a medal and t-shirt. The top scoring teams were: DeRidder Elementary, first place, East Beauregard Upper Elementary, second place, and Pine Wood Elementary, third place.

Winners scoring overall top total points for boys and girls were presented plaques. The top three individual boys and girls will compete in the state meet in April at Pineville High School. They include: Sam P., first place boys, Zarieah T., first place girls, Maxwell B., second place boys, Arieana T., second place girls, Trevor F., third place boys, and Anna G., third place girls.

Local sponsors for the event were: Beauregard Health System, Sheriff Mark Herford, Millard Morris, Bardin Vending, Dr. David Brown, Domino’s Pizza, Brookshire Brothers West, Paws N Claws, and CBG.

“We want to thank our coaches from each school, all of our volunteers, and our sponsors who make this special event possible each year.  Promoting proper fitness and healthy lifestyles for our elementary students makes a difference now and for their futures,” concluded Greene.

The Physical Fitness program is sponsored by the Louisiana Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
