Hallway Heroes at K.R. Hanchey Elementary

Hallway heroes are on duty each morning at K.R. Hanchey Elementary

“Are you ready?

Are you ready?

Are you ready for a great, great day?

Hurray!”

Thirty-six first grade students gather each school morning at 7:20 a.m. in the front hallway of KRH, put on their superhero capes, and greet students, faculty, staff, and parents with cheers and chants to set the tone for a positive day.

Hallway Heroes, a program created and implemented seven years ago by Assistant Principal Sallie Ford, allows first grade students to exercise leadership skills, be role models, and assist their fellow students.

“Our hallway heroes see it as their responsibility to help everyone start the day with a smile,” explained Ford.

Hallway heroes are tasked with walking pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students to their classrooms each morning. At the beginning of the year, when these younger students are not as familiar with the school and the routine, the hallway heroes are very busy.

“As the year progresses, fewer students may need to have a friend walk them to class, but everyone still needs to be encouraged to have a good day and everyone enjoys the upbeat, smiling, energetic greetings they receive when they enter our halls,” said Ford.

“I even have parents tell me the chants stay with them throughout the day, as well.”

A few students from each first grade classroom are selected to become Hallway Heroes. These students must show up early, keep up with their capes and bring them each day, and be ready to share a positive attitude and a smile with everyone entering the halls of the school.

Fridays are “payday” for those who have shown up on time, kept up with their capes, and have completed their week with positive results. The students get to select prizes from treasure box for their efforts. Ms. Ford gladly accepts donations from parents and community members for the treasure box.

Throughout the week, the Hallway Heroes exhibit four pillars of character education – trustworthiness, caring, responsibility, and citizenship. They learn leadership and practice empathy. They lend a helping hand and make KRH a better place.

They truly are KRH Hallway Heroes.

As they put away their capes at 7:40 a.m. and make their way to their own classrooms, Ms. Ford calls out, “Remember, you set the example.”

And with that, another day at K.R. Hanchey Elementary begins.
